Web Measurement: What You Don’t Know Would Make A Great Book

by: Steve Jackson

“What’s in it for me?” you ask. “Why should I measure how people use my website? How does it help and what does it all mean?” The purpose of this article is to try to give you some insight into effective web measurement and to talk about the most important page of any website, the landing or home page.

Why measure at all?

Fred Flintstone lived in the Stone Age but we live in the Information Age. We deal with a constant flow of information from TV, websites, email, RSS feeds, mobile phones, PDAs, radio, newspapers, flyers, billboards, and magazine covers. Even the sides of buses hit us with information about companies, products and services. So why on earth, in the midst of this information overload, would you want to measure how people use your website, another source of data to barrage you with even more information? The answer is quite simple and is summed up best by the 18th century writer Sydney Smith. “What you don’t know would make a great book.”

Consider this.

Your business is selling $50,000 worth of product a week (5000 units a month) through your website. You are delighted with these results, as many would be, and you only measure them because you figure you’re doing something right. However your competition, always watching and waiting for their chance, come along suddenly and steal a lot of your market share before you know what’s happening. How? They were consistently testing how they could improve their conversion rate online and after they had maximized their conversion rate, they went out and aggressively targeted your potential customers. The bounders! However since the conversion rate on their website is much higher than yours, they eat your market like a hungry lion.

Let’s put it another way.

You are successfully selling 5000 products per month through your website but your conversion rate is only 0.18%. According to research carried out by shop.org, the average sales conversion rate is 1.8%. That means that you could be selling 10 times as many products (50, 000)! Imagine what that could mean to your bottom line. If you don’t know what your conversion rate is, then you don’t know how to improve it or even that it needs improvement.

Measuring conversion is not complicated.

Measuring sales or prospect conversion is very easy. Over a given time period, you simply need to know how many people buy or register an interest in your product or services as a percentage of how many visitors turn up. However, there is more to effective measurement than simply measuring this kind of conversion.

What a good measurement tool should give you.

The ability to improve your conversion rate depends, at the very least, on 2 basic things. In essence, this is what you ‘have’ to measure to begin a conversion improvement program.

· Firstly, you need to be able to accurately measure the number of visitors arriving at your website.

· Secondly, you need to be able to see how they use the website by looking at the paths they have taken and how long they have spent browsing your pages.

Don’t just sit there going hmmm….

You look at the paths that regularly ‘don’t’ lead to a conversion and try to improve them. Don’t simply sit there looking at your path tracking tool wondering to yourself why people don’t convert, but look at your website and physically use the path that your visitor has exited. This is where careful analysis is required and where comparisons should be made with paths that ‘do’ convert people. In many cases, variables that are present in the higher conversion paths are not present in the lower conversion paths.

It’s that simple. If you regularly compare the best paths and the worst paths whilst measuring your changes consistently, there should be a steady improvement in conversion. You undoubtedly will make mistakes, but that is why you should carefully measure any changes you make, and why you should measure one change at a time. If you change more than one variable, then you won’t know which change made the difference and you won’t learn anything valuable.

Of course this takes a lot of time and effort on the web marketer’s part, but I never claimed it was going to be easy. In comparison to say direct mail marketing or TV advertising, it is still much less expensive when you do make a mistake.

The landing page

The landing page deserves special attention. When people do a search on Google, for instance, they have something in mind when they get to your landing (home/index) page, and if you’re not it, they have gotten to you by mistake. There is nothing you can do about this at all. It’s a simple fact of life that people using keywords like “improving conversion” could be talking about a web site marketing campaign or catalytic converters for their car.

The landing page however does require special attention from you as a web marketer because you want to reduce the number of 1 page exits from this page as best you can. This means your focus should be purely on the visitors who arrive. How well you service their needs when they find you is critical to your level of conversion. Again, measuring the visitors who arrive and the ones who leave immediately (the bounce rate as it’s sometimes called) is a good measure of how good your home page is at getting its message across. The ones who read for a few seconds and leave aren’t your target market so don’t worry about them. On the other hand, the ones who read for a little longer and leave might be slow readers, or might be your target market so concentrate on getting that number down. Your conversion rate for your landing page should rarely be measured as registrations or sales. It’s more likely reading time (for those websites that make the proposition on the landing page) or click-through to another section of the site.

Here’s an example...

Using our measurement system, we recently made a study of how people used our website. We found that the landing page was converting 68% of the readers. The objective of the landing page is simple: get the reader to move to another page. The landing page headline is “Are you driving qualified traffic to your website but not getting enough customers or prospects?” This headline, the fact that we go on to describe the target visitors dilemma in the first paragraph, and the fact that there are links to articles which educate the reader (more headlines, to pique the curious among you) mean that we get a good percentage of readers who arrive and continue further into the site. We’re always working on the other 32%, but by analyzing the bounces, we found that 50% of them were possibly irrelevant traffic. We have an article starring Winston Churchill that describes how colorful language can grip a reader, and many visitors were arriving at our pages looking for a history of the great man. And as we mentioned above, we also found that some readers were looking for catalytic converters (the keyword conversion brought them to our website). So overall, it meant that only 16% of our target audience left without doing anything. Maybe the phone rang. We can’t measure that!

Our tests on the landing page have been numerous, but now we’re frightened to change the headline. Seriously! Because simply by changing the landing page headline, we improved clickthrough by 36%. That’s nearly double what we were getting over the same time period six months ago. So if you think you can write a better headline for us than the one that currently grabs the attention of 68% of our readers, email me and I’ll test if it is better than the one we’re using!

Another thing we tested was urgency. We had a section on our landing page that said you could get a free e-book by subscribing before a given date. The date was cunningly set to change every day to the same day’s date. It worked. We got high numbers of subscribers in a short space of time and hit a 35% conversion rate, which we considered incredible. Over 1 in 3 people subscribed to get the book. Why did we stop? We listened to our readers who were getting annoyed by irrelevant information on the landing page. New subscribers didn’t mind seeing the message, but the returning visitors, the ones you should really pay attention to, complained about the same message with an updated date. It proves one thing though. If you have a special offer in mind, urgency works.

Incidentally, the fact that all of the above was tested on the landing page doesn’t mean you should forget about the rest of your website. For instance, one of our recent articles is very well visited and got terrific feedback from critics and other web publications. But as an entry page, the URL also has a very high 79% bounce rate. We have analyzed it and have drawn a tentative conclusion. We think it’s because we haven’t given readers anything to do when they finish reading. They get to the bottom of the page and that’s it. The end. Article over. And they leave. So now we’re going to add a new section at the bottom of our articles which encourages subscription or clickthrough. Again, by analyzing and changing things, we hope to improve. If it doesn’t make any difference, or in fact makes the rate worse, we have lost very little, we simply put the page back to the way it was. Testing is about trial and error.

In Summary

I will never be too clever to ever stop measuring how people use our website. I don’t know what will work with our visitors the first time around. I couldn’t have said that one headline would work better than another until I tested it. I couldn’t have said that using great copy that instills a sense of urgency in the reader would work better than not instilling urgency in the reader until I tested it. I couldn’t have told you whether adding article links to the first landing page would improve click through until I measured it. I couldn’t have said whether one graphic would work better than another until I measured it. I couldn’t have told you that all these small changes altogether would improve our subscription rate to over 15% every month, until I measured it. In other words, by measuring how people use your website, you can continuously improve it and therefore improve the conversion rate, which eventually has a positive impact on your bank balance.

In other words what you don’t know about your visitors movement through your website would make a great book.

My Rich Mum's Ebook Secrets

by: SS.Jay

As usual, I walked into the Starbucks for my morning coffee.

Enjoying my morning coffee in Starbucks has been a routine since a year back. Now, everything in that particular Starbucks seems so familiar. Even the customers looked similar.

Just as I was walking to my favorite table with my warm coffee, I notice a lady meddling with her personal computer while sipping her drink. I took a glance and swore that face looked familiar. Anyway I thought my memory might not have fully awakened and so continued my walk towards my table. Now, I sat facing straight to this demure lady and suddenly it struck me, she was a well-known internet marketer, let’s call her My Rich Mum. I was planning to start my own e-book business and have been surfing for more information and her picture always seems to pop up in e-book sites.

I knew I needed a mentor like Rich Mum if I wanted to start a successful e-book business. I was usually a shy person but at that moment, some part of me told me to get my back off the seat and walk towards her. Well, I did just that. I approached Rich Mum and started a conversation. I introduced myself and told her I was planning to start an e-book business and asked if she had any tips or advice. All she did was to pull a card out of her purse and told me to only open the card when I reached home. The “namecard size” card was wrapped in a light blue wrapper. Rich Mum then wrote her personal contact number on the back of the card and told me to read, adsorb and understand the contents of the card. Her instructions were for me to understand the contents and to call her the day after.

Not knowing what else to do, I thanked her and went back to my now cold coffee.

That day after work, I went home all excited, ready to unveil the contents of the card. As I carefully removed the beautiful blue wrapper, I saw the contents of the card:

My Personal Guide to an E-Book Business

1. Choose my topic

2. Write my E-book

3. Create my website

4. Accept payments

5. Promote my website

That was all the contents on the card, simple and logical and yet so divine. I started to break down the contents one by one and tried surfing the internet for more information and voila, that was it. The 5 steps are all I need for my e-book business.

I couldn’t wait until the day after; I had to call Rich Mum the following day for a meet up. I wanted to know what the contents meant to her. Rich Mum, being the kind lady she was, agreed to meeting me for lunch. This time, I armed myself with a new pen and notepad.

Finally at 1.30pm, I got to meet Rich Mum again. This time, she started her speech with a serious tone: “Jay, if you wish to understand more about the contents on the card I gave you, you will have to pay me $1000.” I wrote Rich Mum a cheque on the spot. Hey, she was a famous internet guru and people would pay up to the thousands for by the hour consultation.

Soon we were discussing about e-books and I was busy trying to jot down everything she said, word for word, sentence for sentence.

The moment came when she started to explain the contents on the card she had gave to me earlier the day before. This was it, I specifically told Rich Mum to speak slower. (My hands were tired by now!) The following was what Rich Mum said exactly:

“Choose my topic

This is where most people would take tons of time during their creation of their e-book business. Trust me, people climb onto the e-book wagon with only one objective in mind, making as much money as possible. Your first priority should be adding as much value as possible, when you do that, people will automatically part their money with you. Before you plunge into choosing any topic, always ask yourself the following questions:

“What do I do for a living?”

“What are the types of knowledge I have?”

“What am I interested in?”

“Are there secrets I have that people might be very interested in?”

The above questions should lead you to adding value to a certain group of people and earning money at the same time.

Write my e-book

Once you have the above step covered, once you already have your topic, writing your e-book should be a breeze. You do not need distinctions in English to write an e-book. People love e-books which are written in a more casual tone and not a stern go by the book tone. I always create my table of contents first, and then simply proceed to elaborate on the points I wish to bring forth. It’s really that simple. After completing that e-book, I almost always convert my e-book into a PDF file, so that more eyeballs will be able to read it. The PDF format is friendly with most desktop platforms.

Please always format sentences to be of 1.5 spacing and try to use larger fonts. This is because of the fact that it is always harder to read on the computer screen as compared to a hard copy.

Create my website

Your e-book website is not going to be a complicated website full of programming jargon. All you really need is two important pages, namely the Sales Page and the Thank You Page. The sales page will be where you show visitors your sales letter; it is the showcase of your e-book business. The thank you page is where you will have a link for the download of your product; in this case your product is your e-book.

You can be a total computer idiot and yet own e-book businesses. A great tip to creating that website is to reply on friends who are well-versed in web designing. There is absolute no need to hire expensive web designers to do the same job a student web designer would do for a lunch treat. That was how I started my first e-book business back in 1997.

Accepting payments

A lot of people start their e-book businesses to make money, you need to start your e-book business to add value and then to make money.

An E-book business always accepts credit card payments due to the fact that the credit card is the number one paying tool over the internet. To accept credit card payments, you will need a merchant account that will process your customer’s cards and make sure payment is made. There are a few third party merchant accounts that will handle all credit card payments for your e-book businesses. The best part is you do not pay until you make a sale.

Promote your site

This is going to be the most difficult part of your e-book business. The hard fact is that Sales is directly proportional to Traffic. The most traffic you can get to your site, the more sales you will make.

There are a couple of great ways to generate traffic to your site. One of these ways is to create a free e-book, report or course.

All you do next is to send out the free e-books, reports or courses in anywhere possible and see the traffic pouring into your site. Remember, people are always looking for free information over the internet, so if you are able to provide great free information to people, they will spend on your website.”

There you have it, the 5 steps to an e-book business unveiled. My hands were trembling by now. After an hour of hardcore e-book coaching, Rich Mum was ready to leave for her game of tennis, leaving me to adsorb the notes I have just taken.

* For your information, Rich Mum tore the cheque and before leaving, she whispered: “People will always be more committed after parting with their money.”

Review: eBook Secrets Exposed

by: Michael Southon

If you want to make a lot of money with your own eBook and you only read one book on the subject in the next 12 months, I strongly recommend that it's 'eBook Secrets Exposed' by Jim Edwards and David Garfinkel.

The authors are both well qualified in this area. Jim Edwards has written five best-selling eBooks (including 'The Lazy Man's Guide to Online Business' and '33 Days To Online Success').

David Garfinkel is considered by many to be the world's greatest copyrighting coach. He's an award-winning business journalist and is also the author of several best-selling eBooks, such as 'Advertising Headlines That Make You Rich' and 'Killer Copy Tactics'.

There have been so many books on this subject that I really couldn't imagine how this book could add anything new.

But I have never before seen an eBook that explains so clearly how to do it. I got the feeling that you could literally walk in Jim Edwards' footsteps and get the same results he did (over 4,500 eBook sales in 9 months).

What makes this book very readable and enjoyable is that it's simply a long interview - David Garfinkel asks the questions and Jim Edwards gives the answers.

The book is packed with so many 'insider tips' that's it's difficult to know where to begin, but one of the most valuable tips is how to find out - before you write your book - if there's a market for it.

You do this by following Jim Edwards' 5-Step 'Ultimate eBook Success Formula'. The formula allows you to find out if there's a target audience that is already actively looking for the information you're about to sell online. And if so, if they are prepared to pay for it.

One of the interesting things you'll discover in this book is that competition is actually good for your eBook.

If you come up with an idea for an eBook and you find that there are no competing books, you need to get worried - it means there's probably no market for that idea.

But if there are books competing with yours, you're on safe ground - you know you have a market.

And don't be put off by competition: anyone who is serious about a particular subject will buy at least 4 or 5 books on that topic.

Many eBook authors who make big money quickly with their eBooks do resale rights. Instead of making $29 per sale, they're making $99 per sale. As you can see, resale rights can get you into serious money very fast.

But there are definite pitfalls with resale rights (such as finding out a few months later that your cherished information product has become a free eBook). If you want to avoid these pitfalls, you need to read Section 2 carefully.

You might think that best-selling eBook authors don't bother with affiliate programs. Wrong!

Jim Edwards shows you that one of secrets to making money with your eBook is to load it up with back-end affiliate links. But there's a right way to do this and a wrong way (more about this in Section 5).

But the real secret to how Jim Edwards made over $40,000 in one month from a single eBook is joint ventures - finding people with lists of 10,000 or even 100,000 and getting them to do a personal recommendation to their readers.

On the Internet it's not products that make money, it's lists (products don't sell, lists do). Or as Jim Edwards puts it: 'the power is in the pipes, in the distribution'.

Let's say your eBook is priced at $29 and you find someone with a list of 10,000 and they do a mailing that results in 3000 people turning up at your website.

And let's say that those 3000 visits result in 90 to 180 sales - you and your joint venture partner are suddenly making thousands of dollars in a few days.

Jim Edwards shows you exactly, step-by-step, how to set up a joint venture. He even shows you the exact same letter that he used to set up joint ventures for his book 'How To Write and Publish Your Own eBook in a little as 7 Days'.

One of the keys to making joint ventures work is what Jim Edwards calls 'the Santa Claus technique' (more on that in Section 2).

A question many people have is how to price their eBook. And it's crucial that you get this right. In Section 4 Jim Edwards reveals his 'pricing formula' - a very clever way to find your eBook's 'breakpoint' or equilibrium.

There's another very valuable tip in Section 17 - 'My Secret Method For Slashing Refunds' (this tip on it's own could be worth the price of the whole book).

This is the best book on eBook publishing I've read in the last 18 months - in fact, while reading it, I came up with the idea for my next eBook!

The Story of a Downsized Manager and His Ebook Business

by: SS.Jay

If you've been following the business and economic news around the globe, you should know about how unemployment rates have hit year lows. The recent economic downturn was one of the worse in history and has affected loads of people. In fact, companies were cutting cost for any small reason and retrenched numbers hit more than 1 million worldwide.

My best friend of 10 years, Mark, was a manager with a listed company. About a year ago, he got retrenched and suffered from depression. Just recently, we met up for some drinks and he has started his new career with much success, earning a hefty 5 digit figures monthly. I got him to write the below article which describes his career path.

*** *** *** ***

It was 4th of April 2002, and after having a light breakfast, headed for work as usual. While I was driving along the busy streets, my eyes kept twitching, and deep inside I knew something was going to happen, I drove real careful that rainy morning.

Upon reaching my office, I was told to make a stop over at my superior's room. The moment I stepped into her office, I knew instantly that something was wrong. She went on and told me about the company's difficult moments, how I have performed during recent years and finally came the final stab, "Mark, I'm sorry, our company no longer needs your service and feel you can crave your own career somewhere else." Even though I was kind of prepared, my heart sunk.

I was making almost $10000 per month, and suddenly I'm left with nothing, the only relief was that I'm alone in my family, no one else had to suffer with me. For the next few days, I was trying to drown my sorrows with drinks. That was my life for the next few weeks, until one day, I flipped through the morning papers and saw a seminar which caught my attention: "Quit Your Job, Make Money At Home!" Okay, I thought to myself, "It was a free preview and I had nothing to lose, why not."

I attended the seminar and my life took a 360 degree turn. Although the seminar only briefly introduce about the concept of Ebook Businesses, I had made up my mind to start my first Ebook Business. I couldn't spend on boot camps, expensive workshops with my current situation. That didn't stop me though, with a little savings, I cooped myself at home learning all about building an ebook business. I spent tons of time, in fact almost five months before I came up with my first Ebook business. Unknowingly, I had spent thousands on learning to build my ebook business. My savings were seriously depleting to a point that I might not be able to feed myself any further. Fortunately, that point didn't never came and I'm hoping it won't.

After I successfully created my first Ebook Business, I made some money and went on to build a couple more businesses. I'm proud to say that I can build my ebook business with much ease now. In fact the following 5 steps is all anyone really needed to build an ebook business.

Every time I plan to start another ebook business, I follow my 5 step formula:

  1. Choosing a Topic
  2. Creating the Ebook
  3. Creating the Site
  4. Accepting Payments
  5. Marketing my Site

Choosing a Topic:

Most people back off when they try to come up with a topic for their ebook. For me though, it's one of the simpler steps. I ask myself a few questions:

"What is my Passion?"

"What do I know about, my knowledge?"

"What am I interested in at this instant?"

These three questions usually immediately give me a topic that I would love to write on. I have written on a few subjects I was totally alien to, but my interest in the subjects allowed me to write about the subject and at the same time learn more about it.

Creating the Ebook:

This is also real simple, once I've decided on a topic, I simply elaborate on the points I wish to put across. I write my ebook in Ms Word and then convert it into a PDF format, because I want more people to be able to read my book. There's some common logic to writing an ebook. For example: Its much more difficult to read from a screen compared to a printed copy, for this reason, I always format my sentences to be of 1.5 spacing and try to use larger fonts.

Creating the Site:

I was a total computer idiot when I first put my mind to starting an ebook business, in fact I still am one right now. When I first started, I didn't want to use professional web designers (they cost too much!). SoI approached a few web designer friends and asked them to come up with templates that I can just edit and use. Of course, I didn't know anything about loading the site and all, and til today, I'm still grateful to my friends who created those templates with detailed instructions to using the templates. Now, whenever I plan to launch another ebook site, I simply use an HTML editor and edit the templates according to their documentation. I spent nothing on creating my sites, my friends only requested dinner for their work and I truly appreciate that. Technically speaking, I haven't spent a dime creating my sites.

Accepting Payments:

This is the whole point; I wanted to start my ebook business for one simple reason, to make a living. I was downsized, I had no money, and I needed money!! I didn't have particularly good credit history and couldn't get myself a 1st party merchant account, (I didn't want to spend thousands on those anyway!). Still I am able to accept credit cards in all my sites, and I spent a one time fee of less than $50.

Marketing my Site:

This is where I had to work really hard on. No wonder they called it Internet "Marketing". Marketing makes or breaks any internet marketing site. I learnt that first hand with my first ebook website. I only made a tiny amount simply because of ineffective marketing. Now, a year later, I"m able to generate targeted traffic, some of them totally free. One important equation I learnt was that Sales was Directly Proportional to Marketing!!

It has been almost 20 months since I was downsized, and frankly speaking I went through some of the most difficult times of my life. The Internet literally brought me back to life and I"m real grateful. Now, I live comfortably off my ebook businesses and have plans to marry the woman I have loved all my life.

Easy eBook Ideas

by: Dan Grossman

Everybody should love eBooks. You can give them away in order to promote your site, increase subscribers to your newsletter, or just as a free gift. You can write about something people want to know and sell them for a profit. There are a great many eBooks available out there for you to distribute or to purchase resell rights to, but that doesn't compare to having an eBook of your own.

The problem is that most site owners don't have the time or the patience to write their own eBook. Some start and think they don't have the writing skills to create something they'd want to share with others. So why not use some of the content you already have to create an eBook?

MAKE YOUR WEBSITE INTO AN EBOOK!

Especially if your site contains lots of useful information and reference material for others, this can be a great gift to give away to your visitors. Turn your entire website into an eBook and allow people to browse your site offline, or simply read through many articles without having to load them from your site. You can also place static advertising in the book on pages related to the ads.

Considering everyone can visit your site online, this isn't something you can sell, but it's a good gift to give away. This is a great way to brand your site! Every time someone opens up your eBook, they remember your site and because they have something that's going to last longer than the time they spend on your site online, it keeps your site in their minds a bit more. When they read through the eBook, you're likely to get repeat traffic as they return to your website to revisit and see what's new.

If you have especially long articles, tutorials or other content on the site, you could make individual eBooks for each and link to them from their corresponding webpages. Let your visitors finish reading when they have time, while still building your brand and reminding them of your website. If it's something they'll be referencing a lot (such as a how-to guide), they'll thank you for it.

MAKE YOUR EZINE INTO AN EBOOK!

If you've been publishing for a long time, you probably have hundreds of pages of content (whether you realize it or not) which can easily be made into an eBook. There are several uses for this eBook and several benefits to making one.

Your eBook can be used as a giveaway to subscribers in order to increase new signups. Increase the effectiveness of your signup forms with text like

"Get access to our backissues archive! Subscribers can download it as a free eBook and browse hundreds of pages of useful hints, tips, and tricks!"

This should increase your subscription rate if you're not already giving something away. If you are, your new eBook will make a great addition. You can also give it away to your existing subscribers as a gift; this should please many of them, keeping more of them as long-term subscribers.

If your eZine is top-quality with useful information in it each issue, you can sell your backissues as an eBook. Assuming your eZine is a focused topic, you may have covered enough to advertise it as a "how-to" guide. Just order the issues in terms of what they will teach the customer once they buy it. If your eZine is only available as a paid subscription, this can be a bonus you give away to your paying customers.

How To Create and Market Your own E-Book

The Internet presents an amazing opportunity for anyone who knows how to research and write.

There's masses of free information on the Web - all you have to do is gather it together and package it, and you have an E-Book that people will pay for.

"But if there's so much free information on the Web, why would anyone pay for my E-Book?", you may be wondering.

The answer? Convenience!

They'd rather buy your E-Book and save themselves the hours, days and weeks that you spent researching it and putting it all together.

STEP 1: Writing Your E-Book

Pick a Topic. It could be 'How to accept Credit Cards on the Web without having a Merchant Account'. Or it could be '25 Free Resources For Getting More Traffic', or it could be about Cooking, Gardening, Dog Breeding, etc.

Write down the Title of your E-Book in the center of a blank page and circle it. If you can't think of a title yet, just write down the subject that your E-Book will be about (e.g. Dog Breeding).

Then jot down 8 or 10 Basic Ordering Ideas (BOIs) in a radius around your E-Book title or concept.

If you're having trouble coming up with BOIs, hold in your mind the title or concept of your E-Book and then ask yourself these questions: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, HOW and WHEN.

Now connect the Basic Ordering Ideas to the E-Book title with outward-pointing arrows, like the spokes of a wheel.

Under each BOI, draw a vertical line and against that line, jot down the sub-ideas that belong under that Basic Ordering Idea.

Now turn your Mind Map into an outline. Take the Basic Ordering Ideas from your Mind Map and order them, 1 to 10 (or 1 to 8, 1 to 12 etc); These are your Chapter headings. Now take the sub-ideas and write them down under each BOI; these are your Chapter sections.

I recommend you write the text of your E-Book as a single Microsoft Word document. This allows you to get a feel for the overall structure of your E-Book, and it also makes spell-checking much easier.

STEP 2: Creating Your E-Book

Now divide your Word document into single pages; these will become the HTML pages of your E-Book.

There are well over a dozen different E-Book compilers on the market.

Here are two compilers that are free:

However, if you want to make a good impression with your customers, I highly recommend that you use a commercial E-Book compiler.

Here is a list of commercial E-Book compilers:

STEP 3: Formatting Your E-Book

There are many sites that offer ready-made E-Book templates, some free, some you would have to pay for.

Here's a site that offers free E-Book templates. http://stickitsoftware.freeyellow.com/neobooktemplates/

And here are 2 sites where you can buy ready-made templates:

If you decide to create your own format, here are some basic formatting tips. Your E-Book should contain:

(i) an Index page that serves as the entry point to your E-Book. It should contain a Welcome message, your copyright statement, and a link to the 'Contents' page of your E-Book.

(ii) A 'Contents' page. This should be a list of all the chapters in your E-Book, with Section titles for each chapter. The Chapter titles should be hyper-linked to the first page in that chapter, and the Section titles should be hyperlinked to the first page in that section.

(iii) A link at the top of each page of your E-Book that says 'Contents' and which takes the reader back to the 'Contents' page.

(iv) The Chapter title at the top of each page, so that the reader knows which Chapter they are reading.

(v) A set of links at the top of each page that allow the reader to jump back and forth between the different sections of the Chapter.

(vi) Forward and Backward arrows (hyperlinked) at the bottom right of each page which take the reader back one page or forward one page.

STEP 4: Selling Your E-Book

There are basically 2 ways of selling your E-Book: either you have a merchant account and accept credit cards yourself, or you use a '3rd Party Credit Card Processor'.

Here are two 3rd Party Credit Card Processors that I recommend. Neither of these 2 companies charges monthly fees.

Each has advantages and disadvantages, which I have summarized below:

(i) Clickbank http://www.clickbank.com/

  • To sell your E-Book through Clickbank, you will have to pay a one-time joining fee of $49.95
  • Clickbank charges 7.5% per sale plus $1
  • With Clickbank you will only be able to offer payment via Credit Card.
  • if you use Clickbank to sell your E-Book(s), you also have a ready-made affiliate program. Clickbank will track your affiliate sales and send out checks every 2 weeks to your affiliates.
  • Clickbank will send you an automatic email every time you (or one of your affiliates) make a sale.
  • Minimum amount before a check is issued is $5

(ii) Ibill (Internet Billing Company) http://www.ibill.com/

  • ibill does not charge a joining fee.
  • ibill charges 15% per sale (more for telephone billing).
  • ibill allows your customers to pay in a number of different ways, such as online check, telephone billing, or credit card. Many people don't have a credit card, so offering your customers alternative ways of paying can significantly increase your volume of sales.
  • ibill doesn't operate an affiliate program.
  • ibill doesn't send you an email every time you make a sale.
  • Minimum amount before a check is issued is $150

The possibilities with E-Books really are endless - you're only limited by your own imagination.

And remember: how ever obscure you think your E-Book concept is, there will be a market for it. In fact, that's the essence of 'niche marketing': the more narrow your focus, the more customers you will find.

Wishing you every success!

How To Write Your Own Profitable eBook

by: Dave Tan

With so many info products covering all kinds of topics available online today, you might be thinking is it really possible to write your own unique eBook at all. It is possible and real trick is to find new problems and turn them into solutions - your own unique info products.

You will find that they are actually a lot of topics not covered yet and somehow at certain point you wish you can find the solutions (eBooks) that will solve that certain problem. Even if there's already an eBook covering a particular topic, there is always new and better ways of solving that problem.

Everyone has their own set of problems, if you can create a product that will solve their problems instantly and offer it at the right price, you already have a winner info product.

But to actually write and put together an eBook requires a systematic approach and you have to be eager enough to write about it. Here are a few tips to help you with your info product creation:

Only write about topics that you're passionate about

If you're not passionate and excited about what you're writing, you will automatically treat it as some kind of boring chores. Your writing will show this and ultimately you won't have the patience or zest to complete the whole eBook - it will just be one of those unfinished writings that will be lost forever.

Write when you're happy or in a good mood

It is a known fact that we will perform better when we are happy. If you're in a foul mood or worried about something, forget about writing. You won't get anything done correctly unless your thoughts are clear and ready.

Be brave and write your ideas down even if it appears silly

Even the most craziest idea can be a winner. You never know unless you have finished writing it and test it thoroughly. Be creative and brave, persist till the end. :-)

Collect everything you need and organize them into points

It will be easier to write an eBook if you have all the resources collected first and organized them into point. This way you won't experience writer block so often. This will definitely speed up the writing process.

When you have finished writing the whole eBook, make sure you check it thoroughly for spelling and grammar mistakes. You can even have your friends read it first for some positive feedback and constructive criticism.

After that, you can start creating the eBook cover http://www.ebookok.com/resources/articles/create_own_ebook_cover.html for your unique info product, write a killer sales copy, and set up a simple website to sell it automatically with an online merchant account.

If you searching for an affordable and reliable way to accept credit card payments online, I suggest 2CheckOut.com - http://www.2checkout.com/cgi-bin/aff.2c?affid=76833

It's really easy to setup and you can start selling in just a few minutes. You only have to pay once to have your account activated, no monthly or hidden processing fee whatsoever. They will bank wire your sales payment once you have reached a certain sales limit which you can set yourself.
